Quitting an application on Windows is easier than quitting on a Mac. In Windows, all you have to do is click on that red X sign. But on a Mac, the red button only closes the application window. You must manually exit the application. There are several ways to quit an app on a Mac, so if you aren’t comfortable with one way, you can use another.

Here are the six methods you can use to quit an app on a Mac.

1. Using the menu from the application menu bar

This one is pretty common, and you’re probably using it now.

Almost all the apps on your Mac have a menu in the menu bar (at the top of the screen) where you can control the various functions of the app. Within this menu bar is an option labeled as the name of your app. For example, if you’ve opened the Photos app, you should see the “Photos” menu next to the Apple logo in your menu bar.

Clicking on this menu and selecting the “Exit” option allows you to quit this application. It’s that simple.

2. Using the Dock menu

When you launch an app on your Mac, it appears in the Dock at the bottom of your screen. You can also quit an application there by selecting the option.

Right click on the app you want to quit in your Dock, select the option that says “Exit” and the app will be closed.

3. Using the shortcut key

Mac also provides you with a shortcut key to exit an application on your Mac. First of all, you need to make sure that you are in the app that you want to quit.

Then press the “Command + Q” hotkey and the application will be closed. This is the fastest way to quit an app, as you only need to press two buttons.

4. Using the menu bar for menu bar applications

Some apps only reside in the menu bar and don’t appear anywhere else like normal apps. For these applications, you need to select them from the menu bar and click on the appropriate option to close them.

In the example above, I closed an app named Skitch in the menu bar by clicking on it in the menu bar and selecting the “Quit Skitch” option. You can do this with all your apps.

5. Using the activity monitor

Activity Monitor tracks all the activities and resources used on your machine. While it provides you with various information about the apps running on your Mac, it also gives you the option to quit an app.

Launch Activity Monitor on your Mac, double-click on the application you want to quit, click the onscreen “Exit” button and then click “Exit” again.

6. Using the terminal command

If you want to use a command to exit an app, you can do so using the built-in Terminal app on your Mac.

Launch Terminal on your Mac, type the following command replacing APP-NAME with the name of the application, and press Enter.

osascript -e 'quit app "APP-NAME"' '

As soon as the above command is executed, the application will be closed.
