A large portion of a chinchilla diet is made up mostly of grass, pellets and water; they don’t need to consume large amounts of fruits and vegetables the way humans do. Their digestion can be compared to that of a guinea pig! You can purchase pellets and items specific to rodents in most Petco, PetSmart, Wal-Mart, and other pet supply stores.
It is definitely possible and essential to provide your chinchilla with freshly cut apples, cabbage, collard greens, strawberries, bananas, and of course carrots! In fact, carrots are especially nutritious not only for their bodies, but for their teeth as well! However, you need to be extremely cautious, large quantities of these foods can be detrimental to the health of your chinchilla.
