Today was Samsung’s day. The Korean company has presented its new folding, some new Galaxy Buds Pro, and, of course, a new smartwatch: the Samsung Galaxy Watch4. On this occasion, Samsung has decided to launch two different models, a standard and sportier one and a Classic one that stands out, among other things, for incorporating the rotating bezel.

Be that as it may, and saving that detail (and the size and weight, of course), both watches share the technical sheet and the functions. The Samsung Galaxy Watch4 will go on sale on August 27 at a price that starts at 269 euros for the standard model and 369 euros for the Classic model. Once the presentations are made, we are going to get to know them better.

Two designs, two approaches

Samsung Galaxy Watch4.

We start talking about design, where we find two approaches. The Samsung Galaxy Watch4 has a 40 or 44-millimeter case (with more or less weight, obviously) made of aluminum. It does not have a rotating bezel, but it does have two buttons on the right side. In fact, it has a low-profile bezel that gives it a very sporty aesthetic.

The Galaxy Watch4 Classic, however, is somewhat larger and heavier. Its case is 42 or 46 millimeters and is made of stainless steel and “other luxury materials” not specified. Besides having a more classic appearance, the most interesting thing is the rotating bezel. By rotating the bezel we can interact with the apps and scroll through the menus, just as we saw in the Galaxy Watch3.

However, despite being watches of different sizes and weights, the screen is the same. We are talking, therefore, of a SuperAMOLED panel protected by Gorilla Glass DX that in the largest watches is 1.36 inches with 450 x 450 pixels of resolution and in the smallest 1.19 inches with 396 x 396 points. In both cases, the density is 330 pixels per inch.

New operating system and processor

So we go inside. The Samsung Galaxy Watch4 is the first to incorporate the Exynos W920 processor, which was presented this week. It is the first five-nanometer processor for smartwatches and promises a substantial improvement in terms of performance. It is accompanied by 1.5 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage.

These components will serve to move one of the undisputed protagonists of the watch, WearOS with One UI Watch. The Galaxy Watch4 is the first to release this new platform developed by Google and Samsung. This one has all the benefits of WearOS (like the Google Play app catalog) and of Tizen (fluidity, aesthetics, and performance). The interface will be similar to what we know from other Samsung watches, only now WearOS will be behind the scenes.

Top the Samsung Galaxy Watch4 and below the Samsung Galaxy Watch4 Classic.

Among the important novelties of this interface is the automatic download of compatible applications on the watch (as is already the case on the Apple Watch), access to the Google Play Store from the smartwatch itself, Auto Switch (to quickly switch between linked Samsung devices) Small improvements that seek to make the operating system something more complete. Of course, to all this are added the functions related to health (which also have a crumb).

But before we move on to talking about it, let’s review the battery. The 44 and 46-millimeter watches incorporate 361 mAh of battery, while the 42 and 40-millimeter ones remain at 247 mAh. According to Samsung, the battery has been designed to last 40 hours, but it will depend on how we use the watch. It should be noted that they have a fast charge and that they are fully charged in less than two hours.

Three-in-one sensor

Samsung BioActive Sensor.

First, the sensor. Samsung has managed to put three sensors (PPG, ECG, and BIA) in one, named Samsung Bioactive Sensor. This sensor brings together the optical heart rate sensor, the electrocardiogram, and the bioelectrical impedance analysis sensor in one. In this way, the space it occupies is reduced and the watch can be more compact.

The most striking sensor is the BIA. What is it for? The BIA is used to analyze the composition of the game, that is, the percentage of body fat, muscles and other tissues, body mass index, and water, among other things. This sensor is typical of smart scales and now we can wear it on the wrist.

One of the great novelties of the Samsung Galaxy Watch4 is the incorporation of the BIA sensor

Of course, we can also analyze the heart rate in real-time, sleep (with the detection of snoring as a novelty ), and the level of oxygen in the blood during sleep. And if we talk about health, we must talk about sports, and the Samsung Galaxy Watch4 allows monitoring more than 100 sports modes and has an integrated GPS chip.
